In 1966 Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the short course for the Country Club of Detroit, a club with a rich history of supporting amateur play. Jones designed a miniature championship layout with the his trademark features: long "runway" tees, "flash" green complexes with challenging bunkers visible from the tee, and a demand for precision instead of power. While only nine holes, this course replicates all the shot challenges of the adjacent championship course, ranging from the selection of a driver from two tees (up to 280 yards each), to short-iron and wedge challenges
