This 1921 Alister MacKenzie masterpiece is the crown jewel of the Sydney, Australia golf scene. Hugging the cliff line of the Pacific Ocean, New South Wales Golf Club (NSW) is ranked the 47th best course in the world by Golf Magazine, yet is only 20 mins from the Sydney CBD. The two most famous holes are the par-5 5th, with its long, downward sloping fairway toward the Pacific, and the 195-yard 6th that plays over an inlet of Cape Banks, but the stretch from 13 to 16 is as good a run of par-4s as you will find anywhere. Wind can be your friend or foe throughout the journey, usually dictating golfers’ fortunes. New South Wales on a calm day is entirely playable but MacKenzie’s layout can turn into a beast. Be especially mindful of the waste areas on holes towards the shoreline. Most balls that entire these areas will be unplayable, making accuracy off the tee paramount.
